The second annual Stick It to Cancer hockey game took place on Saturday, January 24th and managed to raise a total of $5,052 dollars for the Plashko family, whose father, Steve Plashko, has been battling cancer.

All the attendees were encouraged to “unite in the fight and wear white” as the Eagan High School hockey teams faced off against those of Eastview.

The event, though traditionally run by a student in charge of Eagan’s High Schools Against Cancer (HAC) organization, was actually planned quite exclusively by junior Katelyn Vrieze. Vrieze, who is also the goalie for our girls’ varsity hockey team, joined HAC specifically for this event, mostly because she and the Plashkos are “good family friends.”

Vrieze shares why she was interested in taking on a leadership role for this event, “Just knowing how much support Steve Plashko gives the girls hockey team and how he’s always full of joy.” She explains, “His personality is contagious.”

Of the $5,052 raised by the event, $3,000 was made entirely by means of the bake sale, also organized by Vrieze. Approximately $1,700 came from the coffee stands over conferences, and the rest was mostly from donations.

Though Katelyn was not involved in last years’ Stick It to Cancer game, her success in this years’ was not hindered whatsoever. “I’ll definitely try to something like this next year,” she says. “I’m going to try to top this years’.”
