As snow gradually begins to melt, people across the state prepare themselves for the next golf season. Here at EHS, the golf team is no exception: the boys are already meeting and practicing indoors in hopes of being ready once the grass finally appears.
This won’t be the same team that managed to achieve moderate success last year, of course, but that doesn’t seem to be too much of a worry for the boys. “I don’t think losing the seniors from last year will affect us very much, actually,” explains junior Thomas Krueger, “because we have three returning varsity members, and promising players in Ben Andrus and Justin Fodor.”
Those three returning members are Krueger himself, Nick Asta, and Phil Johnson. Last year, the team managed to win third in regions, with Asta winning his way into the individual State tournament as well, but the three of them will be looking to lead the team this year as it seeks another State tournament berth.
“I’m looking forward to sections, and – if we play well there – we definitely have a chance of making it to state,” says Johnson. Krueger echoes those thoughts, albeit with a little more confidence, saying, “Everyone on the team has different strengths and weaknesses, but the expectations I’m setting for this season are for us to win state.” Whether or not the team actually manages to fulfill Krueger’s expectations, the boys are looking forward to the variety of tournaments that this year holds in store and are sure to have an enjoyable – although perhaps condensed – season in 2014.
