Foods to improve your brain power

Trinh Nguyen, Staff Writer

Studying for finals can be exhausting; cramming in all sorts of information to remember in less than a week will drain the brain. From memorizing Shakespeare quotes to reviewing protein synthesis, it is crucial to keep the brain healthy and in its peak working conditions. Studies show that the foods we eat play a vital role in improving our memory, concentration, and cognition.

With finals week approaching, here are some foods to fuel the brain for the stressful week:

Berries

Whether it is blueberries or raspberries, berries are full of antioxidants and Vitamin C that have been proven to improve the performance and memory of the brain. According to Calm Balance, the Vitamin C found in berries improves the nervous system, leading to higher emotional stability, better memory, and higher IQ.

Spinach

Leafy green vegetables, such as kale, cabbage, and spinach, contain many vitamins. Vitamin B12, B6, folic acid, and iron are all sources of nourishment that help support the memory function of your brain. Surprisingly, there is a reason why your parents make you finish your vegetables!

Whole Grain Cereal

Whole grains cereals, such as Cheerios and Great Grains left unopened in your pantry are excellent brain power foods. These cereals contain vitamin E, fiber, and carbohydrates that contribute to a healthy blood flow to and from the brain. Carbohydrates are the body’s preferred energy source, meaning they make an exceptional source of fuel for the brain. Instead of having Lucky Charms every morning, for this finals week, it is better to replace them with a bowl of Cheerios.

Almonds

Nuts, such as almonds, walnuts, and pistachios, are a great source of vitamin E and omega-3 fatty acids, an antioxidant that is proven to enhance your memory.

Dark Chocolate

The recommended serving size of dark chocolate is 1 oz. per day, and in these healthy servings, the dark chocolate will not only increase blood flow to the brain, but it will also give you bursts of energy, increasing your focus. Now, you finally have a reason to carry around chocolate everywhere!
