Bouncing Back

Eagan Girls’ Basketball defeated Prior Lake 56-48 on Tuesday night, bringing their winning streak up to five games.

The Wildcats are about halfway through their regular season, and have 8 wins and only 3 losses. “I think we are doing a lot better than we expected,” senior Sydney Funk shared. “Our record this year is already a win better than last year, so that’s good.”

The girls’ recent successes are raising their expectations for section playoffs, where competition will be tight. While Eastview leads the South Suburban Conference, Eagan, Shakopee, and Lakeville North are each only a game behind.

Captain Abby Gaedtke said that she would like to see Eagan continue winning and be ranked either above or alongside Eastview by the section championship. Then she hopes to advance to the state tournament. With co-captain Dani Bischoff leading the conference in average points scored per game, this hope is definitely not out of bounds.

That said, teamwork is still a major focus. “This year we are a lot closer than we have been in the past, so I think that directly affects how good we’ve been doing,” Gaedtke remarked.

It hasn’t been all easy, though. Gaedtke commented that the toughest game so far was “for sure the Wayzata game because we lost on a buzzer beater, and that was our very first game of the season.” But, she is confident that the team has rebounded. “If we played them now I have a feeling that we’d just crush them.”

According to Sydney Funk, the first game of 2015 was also the most exciting. The score was close in the final minutes, but Eagan pulled through with a 83-82 victory.

The Wildcats’ next game is this Friday at Lakeville South. After losing to the Cougars twice last year, the girls are eager to prove themselves and keep up their winning streak.
